I might as well begin with him, though in fact he can fit anywhere, as the card has no number. It's the only one of the Tarot trumps that made it over to the modern deck, in the shape of the Joker.
He represents the person on the path of life. In the modern deck, the Fool is often portayed as a young man, holding a flower up above his head. He's so wrapped up in looking at it that he hasn't noticed he's about to walk over the edge of a cliff. A dog is jumping up at him, possibly trying to attract his attention.
As with all of the Major Arcana, the Fool's presence in a layout signifies that some pretty strong external influences are coming into play. In this case, it's about - guess what? - folly, naivety, or foolishness. While it's tempting to keep watching the skies, you also have to be aware of where the path is leading. Don't ignore the niggling warnings, and beware of over-simplifying matters.
Reversed, the card warns of recklessness and persistent wrong-headedness.
